Gregory Mellas

Biography

Greg Mellas had 14 years of experience working in community engagement, outreach and development in domestic and international settings before joining Metropolitan State University in 2012. As Director of Metropolitan State's Institute for Community Engagement and Scholarship, he provides leadership for the university's civic and community-engagement efforts and supports the President and Provost in developing strategic university partnerships.

Prior to his current appointment, he served as Service Learning Director, Center for Civic Engagement Leader, and Spanish instructor at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. Before that, he worked as an instructor for English as a Second Language and Citizenship classes at Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio. He also served for two years in the U.S. Peace Corps, assigned to Paraguay.

Greg holds a bachelor's degree in international studies and Spanish from the University of St. Thomas and a master's degree in Spanish from Minnesota State University, Mankato. He currently is pursuing a Ph.D. in higher education organizational leadership and policy development at the University of Minnesota. His research has focused on the efficacy of engaged pedagogy to promote communicative competence and social responsibility among second language learners.
